Where STEM Meets IB

HU-MS² runs two frameworks at the same time, on purpose. One is a serious STEM core — strong math, hands-on science, and the data and design skills that real problem-solving demands. The other is the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, which teaches students to ask sharp questions, think across subjects, and see their work in a global context.

Put plainly: we don’t just teach math and science. We teach kids how to use data to solve real-world problems, think globally through the IB framework, and design the technology of the future. For a 6th, 7th, or 8th grader, that combination is the difference between collecting facts and learning how to think — the kind of thinking that carries into high school, into Howard, and well past either one.

How it works in practice

Two frameworks, one classroom.

STEM and IB aren’t separate periods on a schedule. They’re woven into the same units, so a single project can run from a global question all the way to something a student designs and tests.

IB asks the questions. STEM answers them.

The IB Middle Years Programme is built on inquiry — students start with a real question about the world, not a worksheet. Our STEM core gives them the math, the lab work, and the data skills to actually chase that question down to an answer they can defend.

Global context, local proof

IB pushes scholars to connect what they learn to communities far beyond their classroom. A unit on water, energy, or health stops being abstract when a 7th grader has to measure it, model it, and explain what the numbers mean for real people.

From understanding to building

It is one thing to understand a problem and another to design something that helps. Our scholars move from analysis to creation — sketching, prototyping, testing, and revising — so they leave middle school knowing they can build, not just memorize.
