At Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science, learning extends far beyond the four walls of our classrooms. We believe the world is our laboratory, and our field trips are designed to spark curiosity, inspire innovation, and connect academic concepts to real-world experiences.
Learning through field trips
Our scholars take full advantage of being in the heart of the nation’s capital and on the historic campus of Howard University. Throughout the year, they explore:
- The Smithsonian Institutions — diving into history, culture, and ground-breaking research at the world’s premier museum complex.
- Lego World — hands-on STEM challenges that turn playful creativity into fundamental engineering principles.
- Howard University campus immersions — an inside look at higher education and future careers through visits to the School of Business, the College of Engineering and Architecture, and the Department of Chemistry.
These immersive experiences bridge the gap between textbook theory and future reality — showing our scholars exactly where their passions can take them.
Global learning through travel
HU-MS² believes in the power of global education. To broaden scholars’ horizons and build a deep understanding of diverse cultures, the school has offered international trips that let scholars immerse themselves in new environments, practice language skills in real-world settings, and develop a global perspective.
Past expeditions
- Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (March 2019) — a Spanish-immersion trip led by the school’s Spanish teacher. Scholars helped local residents build outdoor ovens, explored the history of Jarabacoa, practiced Spanish in local markets, and connected with Dominican students.
- Paris, France (March 2019) — a week-long cultural immersion for 6th–8th graders, including the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Notre-Dame, a visit to a local school, and a scholar-led museum tour.
- Puerto Rico — Spanish-class scholars lived in a village, interacted with families, and completed a service project building an outdoor stove for several families.
Future planned travel
Disney Imagination Campus
Science comes to life in workshops that reveal the science behind a favorite Disney theme-park attraction — introducing scholars to imagination-powered learning, storytelling, and physics. Participation is by invitation only.
Barcelona, Spain & Paris, France
On this 8-day experience, scholars will walk the Champs-Élysées and several historic sites in France, then take in Las Ramblas in Barcelona — Spanish guitarists and the sights and sounds of Spanish culture. Participation is by invitation only.
