A message from Dr. Kathryn Procope.

Welcome to the 2026–2027 school year at Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science. Whether you are returning to us or joining our community for the first time, I am delighted that you have decided to partner with us.

For two decades, our school has stood at the forefront of educational technology. Since our founding, we have believed that scholars who look like ours, brilliant, curious, and capable, deserve first access to the tools shaping the world they will inherit, not last. That conviction has guided every device we have placed in a scholar’s hands, every platform we have brought into our classrooms, and every teacher we entrusted with our scholars’ education. Twenty years later, we are not resting on that history. We are extending it.

This year, we continue our journey toward authorization as an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme school. Our IB candidacy is more than a designation we are pursuing; it is a commitment to inquiry-driven, globally minded learning that asks scholars to think deeply, question honestly, and act with integrity. Across all content areas, our teachers are building units that connect classroom learning to real questions in the world beyond Georgia Avenue NW.

We are also thoughtfully integrating artificial intelligence into our instructional practice — safely, strategically, and with our scholars’ judgment at the center. AI is already reshaping the professions our scholars will enter. Our responsibility is not to shield them from it, but to teach them to use it wisely: to understand what these tools do well, where they fail, when to trust them, and when to rely on their own reasoning. Our approach pairs clear guardrails with real practice, so that our scholars become discerning users and future builders of this technology rather than passive consumers of it.

None of this work happens apart from our partnership with Howard University or from you. Our HBCU identity is not a backdrop, it is a daily reminder to our scholars of what is possible and expected. And our families remain our most essential partners. I encourage you to stay connected through ParentSquare, attend our community events, and reach out whenever you have a question or an idea.

I am genuinely excited about the year ahead. Let’s make it an extraordinary one.
